1st Glam Camp student graduates Cosmetology
In 2014, I met with Rachel Welch and her grandmother. She was very shy, quiet and eager to learn more about the world of Cosmetology. As she was only a junior in high school, we invited her to Glam Camp to keep her engaged. Now Rachel has completed her 1500 hours and has graduated as of July 8, 2017. In her own words, here is what Rachel has said about her experience:
“In Junior year of 2014, I was impressed with a visit from the JA school during Career Day at Homewood-Flossmoor High School. This led me to attending the first Glam Camp, two years later. The hands-on activities and wonderful demonstrations influenced my choice to join the team at JA. On September 6th, 2016 I started my first class with Miss Sharon & Miss Donna. Everything seemed hard at first. Building the knowledge to pass the tests was difficult and was stressing me out, since I have always had issues with comprehension and understanding. But with repeated attempts and setting goals, I managed to get to the finish line.
Being here has taught me a lot about the hair industry and what to expect in the real world. I found out during the course of the program that I am allergic to certain bleaches and hair colors as well as things about myself I didn’t know. My allergies, unfortunately, messed up my perfect attendance; but I still managed to graduate with a 90%. I was also told by several people that I wasn’t going to make it through the program. Through the help and encouragement from family, friends, and staff I was able to stand my ground.
During the program I fell in love with barbering. My interest in barbering is leading me on the path to pursue this specialty after graduation. I have also developed relationships with fellow students who have now become friends such as Marketta Ellis. She helped me with my confidence and helped me get on the ball. She helped me study and also read to me when needed. I want to thank JA for this wonderful experience and will return in the future to share my story and help those in need.”
